A timing belt can give you a squeaking warning, or it can snap without any warning at all. When it breaks, the engine will not run, and on many engines a failed belt damages other parts. Most manufacturers call for replacement somewhere between 60,000 and 120,000 miles, so check your owner's manual and have the belt looked at before it fails.
We recommend replacing the belt at the manufacturer's mileage. During the job we also inspect and, if needed, replace the tensioners, pulleys and water pump as a preventive step. The belt connects the camshaft and crankshaft gears so they stay in sync, and a job done right protects the whole engine.
